Joel is a fifty-six year old man (Part Two) and he is the protagonist in the first game. At the start of the first game he is a cold and distrusting man. Joel is not the kind of man to seek revenge. When his daughter, Sarah, passed he did not avenge her. He simply moved on. Joel does not like staying in the past – whether he likes it or not he will continue to look forward and avoid the past. He is originally from Austin, Texas but moved to Boston and lived in a Quarantine Zone during the prologue of the first game. Joel’s character development from the journey with Ellie is incredibly noticeable. He becomes his warm, humorous and trusting self. With a supporting community in Jackson and has someone he will continue to fight for – Joel is content with his life after the events of The Last Of Us.

Ellie in The Last Of Us is a fourteen year old girl, and in The Last Of Us Part Two she is around the ages nineteen to twenty. Ellie is incredibly important to the universe since she is immune to the infection that killed more than half of the world population. She is thought to be the key to a cure. In the first game Ellie works as Joel’s foil. She is humorous, optimistic and adventurous. In the sequel, Ellie is quite different. The traumatic events that went down during the prologue completely shifted Ellie’s personality. She only had one priority, revenge. She inevitably lost herself to revenge, along with her loved ones and her bond with her father-figure. Revenge blinded Ellie. It was not until she had accepted the now, she could see the bond she and Joel had.

Abby appears in The Last Of Us Part Two. She is the dual protagonist in the game. Abby is the daughter of the doctor who was able to use Ellie’s immunity to create a cure. However, her father’s life was cut short when Joel took his life to save Ellie’s. The Firefly teens were taken in by a paramilitary organization: WLF. Here Abby worked out a lot. She wanted to fight for the WLF, she was also planning on avenging her father. Abby became one of Isaac’s – WLF’s leader – favorites. He put his trust in Abby, only for her to give her loyalty up and protect her adoptive family; Lev. This decision ultimately mirrors Joel’s sacrifice to protect Ellie.
